The most often asked question is "what
district is the house in?" or "where should I buy for the best schools?"
The answer to the second question is
relatively simple. Albany and Piedmont are considered to have the best schools.
But many people like the diversity of Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro and even
some Oakland Schools. It depends on whether you're looking at just scores, or
if you want your child to have a diverse education. The best place to start is
with the school system itself. Below is a list of numbers for each school
system. You can call and request a "School Accountability Report Card" from
each school district. This will give you the scores, dropout rates for high
school, description of teaching staff and facilities, teacher/pupil ratios and
class sizes.
The answer to the first question is tricky
for a couple reasons. The lines of individual school districts are not totally
logical. And Berkeley has a lottery approach as to which school you go to, no
matter where you live. So again, the best place to start is with the individual
school system. They can give you the most up to date, accurate information.
Or don't hesitate to call me, if you want my
opinion on which school districts are "the most popular"--which is obviously
subjective.

Time to Move >Why Not Remodel
When your home starts feeling too small or outmoded, you may think that the solution is to remodel. Although it is a workable solution for many homeowners, others who do extensive remodeling end up selling their homes within a few years of completing the work. The decisions you make about your renovation could have a significant impact on whether you can recover your investment when you sell your home.
Real estate agents see a lot of homes and listen to a lot of buyers. Together with architects and professional kitchen planners, they can offer valuable advice on how to improve a kitchen or bath, or add a room that will increase your family's enjoyment and attract future buyers.
Before you decide to take the remodeling plunge, you should consider whether expensive improvements will over-improve your home in relation to the neighborhood. If you are inclined to make an investment in your home that far exceeds the selling price of other homes in the area, it may be better to sell your present home and buy one that corresponds to your needs.
